Rare earth magnets, haematite, steel bar\" width=\"475\" height=\"522\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our theme for the term on Tuesdays is on the use of magnets for clasps in jewellery, and as it is our firm belief that play holds the key to true innovation, today we played like kiddies in a toyshop!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fluxstudios.org\/jewellerynews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/magnets192.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"assemblage - innovative jewellery making courses\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fluxstudios.org\/jewellerynews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/magnets192.jpg\" alt=\"exploring the laws of magnetic attraction at Flux Studios\" width=\"475\" height=\"1269\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Drawing from the deep recesses half-remembered facts on the laws of magnetic attraction \u2013 along with some cautions for pacemakers and credit cards \u2013 students were sent on a hunt to find the most unusual magnetic objects..<\/p>\n<p>In putting aside all notions of practicality \u00a0great new discoveries were made about how we can join the most unlikely objects together. My favourite discovery was that meteorite should be strongly attracted to magnetic force<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fluxstudios.org\/jewellerynews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/magnets13-e1347401273653.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Exploring the laws of magnetic attraction\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fluxstudios.org\/jewellerynews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/magnets13-e1347401273653.jpg\" alt=\"innovative approaches to jewellery making at Flux Studios - Exploring the laws of magnetic attraction\" width=\"475\" height=\"521\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Oh, and that the volcanic rock I picked up from Tenerife is also weakly magnetic too!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fluxstudios.org\/jewellerynews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/magnetic7.jpg\"><\/a>The \u00a0size and quality of a ferrous object, and the consequent size and strength of magnet required to hold it are clearly key factors in designing with magnets in mind. Our assemblages presented talking points for how we might refine these sketches into working, beautiful, precious jewellery. I love this squashed screw that Lizzie found &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>How to integrate steel\u00a0or other ferrous \u2013 containing substances\u00a0and magnets with non ferrous (non-rusting) materials becomes the talking point for next week.
