{"id":405,"date":"2012-12-20T17:44:46","date_gmt":"2012-12-20T16:44:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vicky-forrester.com\/jewellery_news\/?p=405"},"modified":"2021-06-14T22:33:08","modified_gmt":"2021-06-14T21:33:08","slug":"matrix-cad-for-jewellery-level-3-learning-new-skills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vicky-forrester.com\/jewellery_news\/?p=405","title":{"rendered":"Matrix, CAD for Jewellery"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"content_div-405\">\n\n<p>You might tell from my work, I\u2019m fairly hands-on with the design and making process for my jewellery.&nbsp; Designs often evolve through process for me, and there is always a responsive-ness to materials that I had felt intrinsic to my working process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, when I signed up for this CAD course run by Jack Meyer at Holt\u2019s Academy I confess, I expected not to like it much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, using a computer to realise a design and improve your design potential can be viewed as an equally valid process in the act of creation; thus the good student and the sceptic in me had already drawn up their opinionated lines long before this course began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sceptic was beaten back to its corner!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matrix is a software designed specifically for making jewellery, and as I was later to find out, it\u2019s a very powerful, high performance tool in the design and realisation of the jewellery making process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vicky-forrester.com\/jewellery_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/matrix_totem_ring.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"475\" height=\"297\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vicky-forrester.com\/jewellery_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/matrix_totem_ring.jpg\" alt=\"Totem ring by Vicky Forrester designed using Matrix \" class=\"wp-image-418\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vicky-forrester.com\/jewellery_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/matrix_totem_ring.jpg 475w, https:\/\/www.vicky-forrester.com\/jewellery_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/matrix_totem_ring-300x187.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>The matrix interface<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to outputting 3D files that can go straight to the manufacturer for rapid-prototyping&nbsp; Matrix can be used to produce very believable renders of your final designs which, at the click of the mouse can be converted to any material, colour or texture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The software allows you to design around specified precious stone sizes or weights, giving tools to quickly fabricate the setting of your heart\u2019s desire, and on top of all of this, once you have \u2018constructed\u2019 your piece of jewellery on screen you can identify precisely how much metal it will take to make it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vicky-forrester.com\/jewellery_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/vf_engagement_rendered_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"475\" height=\"397\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vicky-forrester.com\/jewellery_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/vf_engagement_rendered_2.jpg\" alt=\"Precious ring \u00a9 Vicky Forrester, realised using CAD software\" class=\"wp-image-416\" title=\"Vicky-Forrester-Cad-Design\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vicky-forrester.com\/jewellery_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/vf_engagement_rendered_2.jpg 475w, https:\/\/www.vicky-forrester.com\/jewellery_news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/vf_engagement_rendered_2-300x250.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This 14 &#8211; day intensive course gave me a taste for what is possible with jewellery design using Matrix. I can\u2019t say it was an easy ride \u2013 Jack is an excellent tutor and he planned the course to give a taste of the real pressures of the designer\u2019s working experiences. The numerous assignments with tight deadlines ensured a perpetual (and realistic) pressure to perform at 110% and the days seemed eternally long, yet not quite long enough to satisfy the perfectionist in me!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve gone ahead and bought the student version of Matrix on a one year limited license.
